Finding My New Rhythm: Homemaking, Family, and a New Season of Life

Life has a way of changing, sometimes gradually and sometimes all at once. This year has brought some significant changes to our family, and I've been learning how to find a new rhythm in our home.

With our other business now closed and my husband retired, our days look different than they did before. We're spending more time together, helping care for our grandchildren, and learning that the routines we've followed for years don't necessarily fit this new season.

And you know what? That's okay.

I've always believed in Progress Over Perfection, and I'm discovering just how important that reminder is as we adjust to this new chapter.

Finding a New Routine After Retirement

For years, our schedules revolved around work, family responsibilities, and everything that needed to be accomplished.

Now that my husband is home, we're learning to create a new routine together.

There have been adjustments, of course. When you're accustomed to doing things a certain way, it takes time to find a different rhythm.

But there have also been unexpected blessings.

One of the greatest has been watching my husband develop an even closer relationship with our grandchildren.

We help care for two little ones at least twice a week, and seeing them run to Grandpa when they arrive brings me so much joy.

Having my husband home has also been a tremendous help. We're learning to work together in new ways, and I'm grateful for this opportunity to spend more time as a family.

Watch: Finding My New Rhythm

In this 20-minute video, I'm sharing more about the changes in our family, the routines I'm adjusting, and the blessings we're finding along the way.

Making Time for Our Health

One change I'm working on is making exercise a priority instead of something I hope to fit into the day.

I've been adjusting my morning routine to begin with working out with weights, followed by my coffee and quiet time.

Now that the weather is cooling down, we're also hoping to make morning walks part of our regular routine whenever possible.

It's easy to get caught up in cooking, cleaning, errands, and family responsibilities. But taking care of ourselves matters, too.

I'm learning that movement, rest, and quiet time deserve a place in my day just as much as the household projects waiting to be finished.

Keeping Homemaking Simple

I've always enjoyed cooking from scratch, keeping a well-stocked pantry, and preparing meals ahead of time.

Those habits are especially helpful during busy weeks or when life doesn't go according to plan.

I still use my flexible two-week meal planning system. Instead of assigning a specific dinner to every day, I choose meals that we can make depending on our schedule, what we have available, and how much time or energy we have.

Having homemade pantry mixes, cooked beans, and freezer meals ready makes a difference.

And on the days when the grandchildren are here, I don't expect to accomplish everything I might on another day.

A routine should make life easier, not become another source of pressure.

Learning to Give Ourselves Grace

Another lesson I'm learning is that not every day needs to be productive in the same way.

Some days are filled with cooking, organizing, and getting things checked off the list.

Other days are spent with family, resting, or simply taking care of what matters most.

I'm learning to appreciate both.

As we get older and our circumstances change, it's important to recognize that the routines that worked ten or twenty years ago may not be what we need today.

There's nothing wrong with making adjustments.

A Book That Has Encouraged Me

The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path by Emma Heming Willis has been a blessing to me personally. If you're caring for someone you love, or navigating changes in your family life, I wanted to share this resource with you.

One resource I use is The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path by Emma Heming Willis.

This book has been a blessing to me as I navigate my own caregiving journey.

If you're caring for someone you love, you may find encouragement in it, too.

Finding Joy in This Season of Life

Perhaps the biggest lesson I'm learning is that life doesn't have to look the way it used to in order to be good.

Our schedules have changed. Our priorities are changing. And we're learning to appreciate the opportunities this season brings.

For us, that means spending time together, enjoying our grandchildren, taking better care of ourselves, and simplifying the things that don't need to be complicated.

I don't have everything figured out, and I certainly don't accomplish everything on my list.

But I'm learning to be content with the progress we're making.

Progress Over Perfection.
